BIOGRAPHY

My Background:

Tadanobu Nagumo, born Feb. 12, 1947, graduated from the Faculty of Engineering, Shinsyu University in March 1969 and joined the Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. (YRC) one month later.

He was appointed Deputy General Manager of the Shinshiro Plant in May 1994 and was named president of Yokohama Tire Philippines, Inc. in July 1996. He returned to Japan three years later to serve as YRC’s Director, Deputy General Manager of the Tire Production Division and General Manager of the Tire Production Technology Department. Shortly thereafter, he was named Director, General Manager of Tire Production Division and by June 2002 he was promoted to Managing Director, General Manager of Tire Production Division and General Manager of the Tire Planning Division.

He was named Executive Director, President of the Tire Group in June 2003 and was promoted to President of Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. one year later.

A longtime environmentalist, Mr. Nagumo has actively participated in numerous eco projects. As an example, in conjunction with the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (where he also serves as JATMA chairman), he recently helped conduct a tire-check campaign at the Hamanako rest area along the Tomei Expressway, where he helped drivers check their tire pressure. He spent the day discussing how properly inflated tires increase safety and reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions that pollute the environment, affect human health and contribute to global climate change.

He has also organized a group of 40 YRC employees that periodically goes to every plant in Japan – floor-by-floor – to make recommendations to other employees about how to recycle and eliminate waste.

His engineering background has served as the foundation for involvement in numerous environmental issues and programs, and he says Al Gore’s insights into global warming have helped refine his beliefs.

“After reading his books, it became clear to me that Yokohama should have that same sort of commitment to environmental activities,” says Nagumo. “I explained my position to our board and they said, ‘Let’s put the environment at the forefront of our corporate agenda.’ Our goal is to make all plants and products eco-friendly, including all operations in Japan and overseas.”

“It’s not enough for companies to just make money. With all of the environmental challenges facing the world, all organizations should try to be a positive green influence. Today!”

Leisure-time activities for Mr. Nagumo, a former college gymnast, include golf, golf and more golf. He is a singe-digit handicap and considered “to be one of the two best golfers at YRC.”

Additional quotes from Nagumo pertaining to the environment:

“At YRC, our basic policy is to use our world-class technologies for protecting the environment. This is the most important responsibility for those of us who are seeking to expand in overseas markets.”

“In April 2006, we achieved complete zero emission (at manufacturing plants in Japan) one year earlier than planned. We also achieved a minus-eight-percent reduction in CO2 emissions in July, more than the objective for reduction of CO2 emissions in the Kyoto Protocol.”

“As a result of YRC’s research and development activities, we’ve developed numerous products with environmental technology as the key element. Most recently, our passenger tire, known as the S.drive, debuted in the U.S. market using a special polymer blend to achieve low rolling resistance (producing enhanced fuel mileage) and high wet traction. And our Super E-Spec passenger tire (not yet available), made mostly from citrus oil, reduces petroleum use during manufacturing by 80 percent.”
