Get a Job: How to Graduate With Your Ethics Intact...
07/11/2008
Summer is here, and plenty of folks will have just graduated and started wondering "what next?" (Besides hanging out and enjoying the summer of course!) What better way to start your career than to find employment that fits with your ethics? But what's a good green student to do when it’s time to leave the campus behind and, gasp, get a job? There may have once been a time when starting a career meant leaving your youthful idealism behind, but nowadays more and more people are looking for ways to balance their work with their beliefs.

If you’re looking to work for someone who shares your ideals, why not start by checking out some green-minded job boards or career sites. TreeHugger, for example, operates a comprehensive list of postings, and our last visit showed vacancies ranging from human resources manager at the legendary Rocky Mountain Institute to sales staff for Voltaic Systems, makers of the solar backpack. Environmental Careers is another site with a similarly broad range of listings. And for those looking more for advice than actual vacancies, GreenBiz has a useful guide on landing the job of your dreams.

Of course, there’s no rule that says you have to work for someone else. Increasing numbers of people, disillusioned with corporate culture, are starting up their own businesses with a view to changing the world. From retailing organic baby-wear, to starting your own farm, whose to say you can’t strike out on your own? Who knows, you may even make a fortune while you’re doing it.
